That Was Then:
I have done the backpacking in Europe thing – staying in youth hostels with the communal bathrooms down the hall.
One time when my husband and I traveled to Venice, we upgraded to a private room WITH a private bathroom. Hot dog! Living Large! That bathroom was so small that it was impossible to shut the door and sit on the toilet at the same time. (I know, T.M.I.) In my twenties, I would often forgo certain luxuries to save a whopping $6. Not so much anymore.
My Time is More Valuable Now
My time is just so much more valuable these days. My husband gets 15 vacation days each year. I have 7 summers left until my oldest son goes to college. I’m looking at 50 for my next milestone birthday. Yikes! How did that happen!
Travel is no longer just about the price tag. It’s more about what I’m getting for my money. A wise woman once told me that she only stays in hotels that are nicer than her own home. She wants an upgraded experience different than her daily life. It’s not worth it to her to downgrade while she’s on vacation to save a few bucks. I get that. I totally get that now.
The Joy of Totally Seamless Travel
To add to this sage advice, I have also learned to appreciate totally seamless travel. ‘Seamless’ meaning most everything is handled ahead of time. No ‘nickel and diming’ involved.
The idea of seamless travel can begin before you even get to the airport.
Leo was my driver to DFW Airport for my trip to St. Lucia. (Exceptional hotels there by the way. More on that in future posts. )
You might notice that it’s pitch black in this picture. Leo was prompt for my 2:30am pickup time and it was still dark when we made it to the airport.
Leo was jolly at 2:30 in the morning – I wasn’t. My joyful travel mindset needed a cup of coffee.
The minute I opened my front door, Leo greeted me and whisked my bag in the trunk of the town car. Instantly, any stress I had had melted away. My trip had STARTED. No worries about where I would park. No problems about angry drivers on the road.
Everything – Taken Care of For You
Inside the car, Leo had moved the passenger seat all the way up to afford extra legroom in the back. Complimentary water bottles were there if I wanted. Leo took care of it all. He took care of me. These are the kinds of people I want my clients to meet when they travel on my itineraries.
You know what I noticed the most during that car ride? How much Leo enjoyed his job. There wasn’t a speck of dust on his car. The leather upholstered seats seemed brand new. He talked fondly of Silverwest and was proud to have worked there for so many years. If I weren’t still half asleep, I’m sure we would have had even more great discussions. We’ll just have to save it for next time.
Totally Seamless Travel
Totally Seamless travel – from start to finish. It’s a nice idea, and I like it. For me, it starts with the drive to the airport. Hiring a car service might not be worth the splurge for everyone, but it’s worth it for me. I highly encourage you to check it out if you haven’t already.
