“Do you guys always sit so close together on the couch?”
My brother-in-law asked when my husband and I came to visit.
It was the first time I noticed we sat hip to hip when we watched TV.
We had been married less than a year. With the birth of each child (we have three) and the addition of the dog, that space between us on the couch has widened.
A whole football team could sit between us now as we watch Game of Thrones.
Getting married is the easy part:
— STAYING MARRIED IS THE CHALLENGE —
You know, life is still good though, we’ve been married 16 years. But – we work at it. Travel helps. It helps A LOT. We try to schedule a trip to celebrate our anniversary each year and anniversary trips can help your marriage too.
3 reasons Why Annual Anniversary Trips Help Marriages:
#1. You Realize You Really Do Still Like Each Other
Life gets crazy and when it does, I can be a bear. And family members are the ones that see it. I don’t know why but I am MUCH nicer to people I don’t know. Crazy, really. That being said, when my husband and I have a chance to go away it can bring us back to the time when we first met. We remember why we got together in the first place.
#2. You Have Uninterrupted Discussion, Is That Even Possible?
Just like most parents, I’m sure, it’s rare that an hour goes by that I am not interrupted by my kids, by my phone, by the dog whining to go out. An anniversary getaway allows you time to think together, discuss together, and eat together in peace—(insert your own crazy eating with kids story here).
Anniversary trips also allow time to appreciate your life together, miss your kids together, and realize that the two of you really have it pretty good.
#3. Travel Provides Clarity
Travel is life changing. You get a bird’s eye view of your world. You step away from day-today life. Stresses are no longer stresses. Hard decisions become no brainers. Light bulb moments abound.
Even more so, anniversary getaways give you a chance to look back at your life and celebrate it.Celebrate your marriage. Celebrate your family. And, to know that marrying each other really was the right thing to do.
Here comes the fun part….Deciding where to go!
